UPDATE: Big 3 ballplayer Adarius Hayes involved in double-fatality crash that closed southbound lanes of Ridge Road north of Ulmerton Road and left others with life threatening injuries.

LARGO, Fla. – Two people were killed and several others injured Saturday afternoon when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Orangeview Drive and Ridge Road, Largo Police Department officials confirmed.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the driver of a Kia Soul attempted to make a left turn onto Ridge Road and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The force of the impact left both drivers fatally injured; additional passengers from the involved vehicles were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.

In the wake of the crash, Ridge Road remains closed between Ulmerton Road and 8th Avenue. Largo Police have urged motorists to seek alternate routes while crews clear the scene. Although alcohol is not believed to have played a role, the department’s Traffic Homicide Unit has launched a full investigation into the collision.

No further details were released as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the deadly crash.

Largo is the third largest city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States, as well as the fourth largest in the Tampa Bay area. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 82,485, up from 77,648 in 2010.

Largo was first incorporated in 1905. In 1913, it became the first municipality in Pinellas County to adopt a council-manager government. It switched back and forth between “town” and “city” a few times, and became a city again in 1974. It was an exporter of agricultural products until the 1960s population growth began to transform it into a bedroom community.
